According to Merriam Webster dictionary online, to optimize is “to make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible”. To Optimize the production schedule is to determine how to sequence the jobs on each resource to maximize capacity, meet quality standards, and achieve on time delivery of orders.
First you must know how to sequence the jobs to achieve the desired results. You may be required to run lighter colors before dark colors to decrease changeovers, or your business could be foods and have allergens to contend with. No matter the attribute, there is a most efficient way to sequence the jobs. Next the jobs should be sequenced in such a way to prevent orders from shipping late. Maybe that requires an extra changeover. If that extra changeover does not cause other orders to be late then it might be worth the time and effort.
How much time and effort does it take to optimize your production schedules? Does your schedulers spend hours updating excel spreadsheets only to have to turn around and do it all over again because a line went down? Or do you have a planning system in your ERP that requires you to cancel and recreate jobs or manually update the planned production dates? Chances are the process of optimizing a schedule using excel or your ERP’s unconstrained schedule is difficult and time consuming.
PlanetTogether’s optimization takes the hard work out of sequencing jobs to optimize the schedule. By telling PlanetTogether attributes and changeover matrixes allows PlanetTogether’s optimization engine “to make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible” a production schedule that maximizes your capacity, meets quality standards, and achieves on time delivery of your customer’s orders. The Optimization engine contains a series of Optimize Weights that are used to specify the importance of each potential optimize setting. There are many toggles under five categories of weightings: Delivery, Productivity, Financial, Material Grouping, and Operation Attributes. Perhaps the financial impact to the schedule needs to have a higher weight than the material grouping on the schedule. These weight toggles will fine tune how it optimizes the schedule.
